About ESRI

The Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) mainly engages in the following roles as the Cabinet Office’s think tank.

  • Compiling National Accounts statistics as represented by GDP and releasing them as the Quarterly Estimates (QE) of GDP and the Annual Report on National Accounts for the purpose of recording the economy as a whole. We also compile and release the Composite Index and other business statistics.
  • Conducting empirical research related to economic and social activities with a focus on macroeconomics, productivity and economic statistics such as National Accounts.
  • Cultivating human resources to spearhead policymaking through training in methodologies for policy analysis.

Through conducting these missions, we contribute to the promotion of Evidence-Based Policy Making (EBPM).
