Research on digital economy satellite accounts
In recent years, the rapid growth of new economic activities driven by digital technologies has highlighted the need to better capture these activities within the System of National Accounts (SNA). In March 2025, the United Nations Statistical Commission adopted a new international standard for the SNA (the 2025 SNA), in which responding to digitalization was identified as one of the key priorities. Key areas of focus include the capitalization of data, the valuation of free digital products, and the development of satellite accounts to more comprehensively measure the digital economy. In line with these global discussions, ESRI is working toward the introduction of the 2025 SNA by advancing efforts to measure Japan’s digital economy. These efforts include examining approaches to measuring data assets and developing satellite accounts that better reflect digital economic activities.
