Topics of research projects in FY2025

In FY2025, we are advancing “fundamental research” that serves as the infrastructure for policy analysis—namely (1) preparations for the introduction of the 2025 SNA and (2) research on the macroeconomy and macroeconomic models—while also engaging in “policy-oriented research” that addresses social issues such as (3) well-being and gender equality/women’s empowerment. Our research activities are organized around these three pillars.

1.Research on the “2025 SNA”

Research on digital economy satellite accounts

Based on the framework of the SNA, we will work on the measurement of Japan's digital economy in an internationally consistent manner and study the development of satellite accounts of the SNA.

Research on economic statistics and indicators which consider environmental factors

From decarbonization perspectives, we will conduct research on indicators that consider the environmental impact of economic activities on GDP, as well as research and development of emission accounts for greenhouse gases and other materials.

Research on measuring the distribution of household income, consumption, and wealth within the framework of the SNA

By making use of the comprehensive framework of the SNA, we will examine methods for estimating the distribution of household income, consumption, and wealth by attributes such as income and age groups in line with the SNA.

Expansion of SNA statistics that relate to productivity, etc.

To provide industry-level data consistent with the SNA on labor inputs which consider qualitative changes and capital service inputs, we will conduct research to Development of Industry-level Productivity Statistics. We also tackle other SNA-related research topics such as methods of measuring marketing assets.

2.Research on Macro economy and Macro-econometric Modeling

Macroeconomic analysis using the Short-Run Macro-econometric Model of the Japanese Economy

We are developing and revising a short-run macroeconometric model of the Japanese economy, in order to quantitatively assess changes in the economic environment surrounding Japan and the impact of fiscal and monetary policies on the economy.

Trade effect analysis using the “GTAP (Global Trade Analysis Project) model”

Using the GTAP Model, we provide support to the Cabinet Secretariat in analyzing the effects on trade, etc. of the future expansion of membership in the CPTPP (Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement on Trans-Pacific Partnership). In addition to this, we also analyze the effects of an increase in the number of foreign workers, etc.

Effect analysis of International emissions trading using the “CGE (Computer General Equilibrium) model”

At COP28 held in December 2023, a global goal was set to triple renewable energy generation capacity. To assess how much this measure contributes to achieving the Paris Agreement and to inform strategies for revising and deepening national reduction targets, we are developing a world environmental CGE model that includes a detailed breakdown of the electricity sector.

Research on the Use of Models for Long-Term Future Projections

We will identify key issues involved in ultra-long-term future projections and develop an ultra-long-term macroeconomic model.

Research on the macroeconomy based on microdata

We pursue research on a broad set of issues relevant to macroeconomic policymaking, including productivity, income and consumption inequality, the drivers of inflation, and the roles of fiscal and monetary policy. Our approach incorporates cutting-edge theoretical frameworks and empirical analyses using micro-level data.

3.Research Addressing Social Issues

Research on Well-being

In recent years, it has become important to promote policies that incorporate the perspective of well-being, which comprehensively considers various subjects such as economic affluence, mental and physical health, and social health. We will conduct research on subjective well-being. We also analyze the relationship between health and work engagement to inform the design of policies that promote health and enhance engagement.

Research on Household Income Disparities and Aging

We examine recent changes in household structure and asset distribution in Japan, assess their implications for policy effectiveness, and analyze how they relate to household economic behavior, including consumption and saving.

Research on the Quality of Medical and Nursing Care

We assess the current state of healthcare and nursing care quality in Japan, identify factors that promote or hinder access to high-quality services, and consider policy options for improving users’ access to better care.

Research on gender equality and Women's Empowerment

We study gender differences in career choices and conduct research on the burdens faced by working caregivers.

Research on Flexible Work Styles and Corporate Digitalization

We analyze the actual conditions of child-rearing environments and examine differences in housework and childcare time across gender and social class, including recent trends. We also analyze how couples with children allocate time to housework and childcare.

Research Study on the effect of fusion of AI and robotics on the Labor Market in Japan

Utilizing patent data and occupational task data from occupational information websites, we will examine the rates of labor substitution by AI technology using a new method, and analyze the impact on the Japanese labor market.

Research on the effects of ICT use in schools on students' cognitive and non-cognitive skills

We will examine how the use of ICT in schools affects students' cognitive and non-cognitive skills.

Research on the impact of ESG stances on corporate behavior

As sustainable global growth increasingly requires companies to further incorporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations, this research examines how changes in Japanese firms’ ESG stances affect their domestic and overseas investment, cost of capital, corporate value, and other outcomes.

Research on Methods for Measuring and Recording “Prosperity” in the SNA

As discussions deepen regarding the measurement of prosperity, we study methods for measuring the value of “prosperity” within the System of National Accounts.

Research on the Impact of national R&D investment on Economic Growth

Using data such as prefecture-level industry productivity statistics, we will analyze how national R&D investment affects economic growth.
