Current Research:Current Research Projects

Topics of research projects in FY2023

In FY2023, we will promote “basic research” that will serve as the foundation (infrastructure) for policy analysis, such as (1) Research on the “2025 SNA (System of National Accounts)”(provisional name)and (2) Research on Macro economy and Macro-econometric Modeling, and we will work on "policy research" concerning (3) Research on creating an "inclusive economy and society" such as well-being, countermeasures against the declining birthrate and gender equality.

We will conduct research centered on these three pillars.

1.Research on the “2025 SNA” (provisional name)

(1)Research on digital economy satellite accounts

Based on the framework of the SNA, we will work on the measurement of Japan's digital economy in an internationally consistent manner and study the development of satellite accounts of the SNA.

(2)Research on economic statistics and indicators which consider environmental factors

From decarbonization perspectives, we will conduct research on indicators that consider the environmental impact of economic activities on GDP, as well as research and development of emission accounts for greenhouse gases and other materials.

(3)Research on measuring the distribution of household income, consumption, and wealth within the framework of the SNA

While making use of the comprehensive economic recording system of the SNA, we will examine methods for estimating the distribution of income, consumption, and wealth of the household sector by attributes such as income and age in a manner consistent with the SNA.

(4)Expansion of SNA statistics that relate to productivity, etc.

To provide industry-level data consistent with the SNA on labor inputs which consider qualitative changes and capital service inputs, we will conduct research to develop industry-level productivity statistics. We also study marketing asset measurement methods etc.

2.Research on Macro economy and Macro-econometric Modeling

(1)Macroeconomic analysis using the Short-Run Macro-econometric Model of the Japanese Economy

We are developing and revising a short-run macroeconometric model of the Japanese economy, in order to quantitatively assess changes in the economic environment surrounding Japan and the impact of fiscal and monetary policies on the economy.

(2)Trade effect analysis using the “GTAP (Global Trade Analysis Project) model”

Using the GTAP Model, we provide support to the Cabinet Secretariat in analyzing the effects on trade, etc. of the future expansion of membership in the CPTPP (Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement on Trans-Pacific Partnership). In addition to this, we also analyze the effects of an increase in the number of foreign workers, etc.

(3)Effect analysis of carbon border adjustment measures using the “CGE (Computer General Equilibrium) model”

Using the global environmental CGE model, We will analyze the effects of carbon border adjustment measures and international emissions trading.

(4)Research on firm's productivity and pricing behavior,etc.

We conduct research that contributes to macroeconomic policy on a wide range of topics. In particular, we focus on theoretical analysis based on the latest research findings and empirical analysis using micro data in order to deepen our consideration of the structure of stagnant productivity and prolonged deflation.

3.Research on creating an "inclusive economy and society"

(1)Research on Well-being

In recent years, it has become important to promote policies that incorporate the perspective of well-being, which comprehensively considers various subjects such as economic affluence, mental and physical health, and social health. We will conduct research on subjective well-being.

(2)Research on countermeasures against the declining birthrate and gender equality

We estimate the economic burden of child rearing, taking into account household factors such as income level and number of children. Using corporate data, we will analyze the management issues faced by female business owners. We will also analyze the wage gap between men and women and the impact of policies related to the declining birthrate on the labor supply of women.

(3)Research on disparities in household finances and the aging of household

Using micro-level household data, we will summarize changes in household structure and asset distribution, examine the effects of various policies, and analyze the relationship with household economic behavior such as consumption and savings.

(4)Research on the flexible working style and individual social life

Using individual data from the Survey on Time Use and Leisure Activities, etc., we will analyze the impact of flexible working styles, such as the introduction of telework, on the distribution of individual life time (work, leisure, housework, sleep). In addition, we will analyze the differences in impact by gender, by family type, and by metropolitan areas.

(5)Research on the impact on the labor market due to the introduction of AI technology in Japan

Utilizing patent data and occupational task data from occupational information websites, we will examine the rates of labor substitution by AI technology using a new method, and analyze the impact on the Japanese labor market.

(6)Research on the effects of ICT use in schools on students' cognitive and non-cognitive skills

We will examine how the use of ICT in schools affects students' cognitive and non-cognitive skills.

(7)Research on the impact of ESG stances on corporate behavior

We will analyze the impact of changes in Japanese companies' stance on ESG on domestic and overseas capital investment, employment, wages, productivity, and corporate value.
