Abstract

In this study, we clarify the factors that influence the efforts of AI utilization in the Japanese wholesale industry and the road freight transportation industry using the individual data from the Japanese Management and Organizational Practices Survey (JP-MOPS). The survey targets 16,002 business establishments and valid responses are 5,099. We apply a logit model to verify how data availability, data accumulation period, size of business establishments, educational background, presence of CIO, and number of competing business establishments affect AI utilization for large-scale and small- and medium-sized business establishments. As a result, in the wholesale industry, the availability of data, the ratio of university graduates or above of general employees, the presence of CIO in belonging company, and the size of business establishments have a positive effect on AI utilization. For small- and medium-sized business establishments in the wholesale industry, increasing the availability of data is expected to advance the use of AI through understanding the data. In the road freight transportation industry, the data accumulation period, the ratio of university graduates or above of general employees, the presence of CIO in belonging company, the size of business establishments, and the number of competing business establishments have a positive effect on AI utilization. For small- and medium-sized business establishments in the road freight transportation industry, having long-term data is one of the triggers for considering the use of AI. In addition, for regardless of industry or business scale, the presence of CIO in belonging company has a significant effect on the efforts of AI utilization. Therefore, it indicates that the current attitude toward AI utilization is largely due to the presence of top executives involved in information and communication technology.
